Cows, pigs, and hens are sentient beings, just as intelligent as we are. They feel loss, love, pain, shame, fear, and solidarity. They want to be free, nurture their young, and play. Yet the factory farming industry is built with total disregard for these animals’ needs. It’s all about maximizing profits. The good news is that there are amazing people doing ground-breaking work to expose animal abuse and change legislation.

Cody Carlson heard about Mercy For Animals when he was a private investigator for a business intelligence firm. Moved by their work, he reached out to the founder, Nathan Runkle (check out his episode). Before he knew it, Cody had quit his job, grown a goatee and become an undercover animal rights investigator.

It was a wild ride. Working undercover as a farm hand is exhausting physical work and emotionally intense. He witnessed how over 4,000 cows were kept constantly pregnant, saw newborn calves torn from their mothers and left to die, or sold for slaughter. He saw how much the animals wanted to play, to be loved. His footage of workers’ cruelty and the atrocities committed in the farm was broadcast by the media and resulted legislation that changed how these animals are treated. And that was it. He was hooked. He went to law school and is now one of Mercy for Animal’s attorneys.

Part of the work Cody is doing with Mercy For Animals is overturning ag-gag laws. Instead of reforming, the animal farming industry lobbies to amend legislation and keep their inhumane practices within the law. From around 2010, ag-gag laws made it a crime to conduct undercover investigations that reveal what goes on in factory farms. Mercy For Animals is winning the fight against ag-gag laws, but some states still have them: Montana, Utah, North Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and North Carolina. If you’re a resident of one of these states, you can help overturn these laws by contacting your local representative and encouraging them to speak out.

Are we ever going to see a world without slaughter houses? YES! With the rise of plant-based milks, dairy profits are plummeting. With growing public support, a radical movement away from meat and towards plant-based eating, changes in legislation and corporate policy, and delicious plant-powered options, we’re going to see the end of factory farming in our lifetimes. Additionally we can all be healthier, protect the environment, help the animals, and feel better than we’ve ever felt by ditching factory-farmed meats and adding more plants to our diets.

What can you do today to help the animals?

  • Contact your law-maker and encourage them to speak out about animal cruelty and ag-gag laws.
  • Join an animal activism group. Mercy For Animals is the leading international farm animal protection organization. You can sign up on the website and check out how you can get involved.
  • Share Cody’s video of footage of how dairy and animals are produced in modern farms. You can check out the viral video at http://www.whatcodysaw.com/.
  • Join Hen Heroes to take part in animal activism.
  • Reach out to the Oink writers’ group if you want to get involved with writing letters to the editor and raising awareness.
  • If you’re a California resident, you can help get legislation passed that would change the game for animals raised in California. Half a million signatures are needed—you can volunteer at com/volunteer to sign up. Please share the link with your friends!
  • You can also donate. Donations help Mercy For Animals run undercover investigations and petition for real change in animal protection legislation.

Cody and Leslie’s tips to eat healthier and plant-based wherever you live:

  • Veganize your meal when you eat out (for example, you can order Denny’s scrambled egg platter and swap the eggs for potatoes).
  • Stop eating processed foods.
  • Eat real, whole foods.
  • Always look at the ingredient list. If it doesn’t read like a recipe, put it down.

We’re here with one of our favorite guests, the super cool, super stylish Leslie Durso (check out Episodes 95 and 96 for her story). She’s a vegan chef, healthy living educator and has been plant-based since she was 8 years old. Leslie grew up in an Italian household, making vegan versions of whatever her mom was cooking.

Now, she loves nothing more than sharing her knowledge and passion for veganism with as many people as possible. Her farm fresh, plant-based recipes are broadcast to over 130 countries, and she’s just partnered with Plant Lab Culinary School offering pop-up cooking courses all over the world. Leslie has also created vegan dishes for all the menus at the Four Seasons Punto Mita in Mexico, where she will be running retreats in 2018.

With just one week until Christmas, how can we bring more plant-based recipes and more love to our holiday? How can we bring more acceptance to the table, particularly to those who might not completely understand our healthy choices? Leslie’s answer: cook for them. Make something so good they are begging you for the recipe. Let them start the conversation. When it comes to spreading the vegan word, nobody wants to be told what to do, they want to be inspired. Let’s inspire them with delicious food. You can find tons of tasty, easy-to-make vegan recipes on Leslie’s website

Drumroll please, we’ve got a very special announcement!

We are so excited to announce that we are taking Food Heals Nation to Italy! We’ve partnered with Leslie Durso to bring you the most beautiful retreat on the Amalfi coast, the most spectacularly stunning coastline in the world. You’ll spend six nights in a villa built into the side of a mountain, with its own organic farm, in the picturesque town of Ravello. This is a magical, healing place: the villa has its own grotto for cold plunges (a natural rejuvenation technique), an infinity edge pool, hot tubs, and the water comes from pure mountain springs. Allison, Suzy and Leslie will be on hand to answer all your questions on health, wellness, veganism, nutrition, building your own brand, podcasting and living the life of your dreams. We’ll hike, swim, play, enjoy, experience real Italian culture, shop, and you’ll learn how to make delicious vegan food with Leslie. But best of all, you’ll make friendships that will last a lifetime. This is a women-only retreat, and a very special kind of sisterhood is forged on these types of retreats. Here’s a little of what you can expect:

  • • Tons of vegan organic food!

Sage and AnnaBlanca, the gorgeous chocolatiers behind Addictive Wellness, are back to tell us all about their new elixir blends that supercharge your health from the inside out.  With their belief that everyone should be able to enjoy organic food, made from ingredients that heal and energize, the couple infuses every piece of their heirloom artisanal, raw chocolate with their love for each other, nature, and passion for superfoods. They’ve created elixirs with the same love and passion for health.

Those who have tried Chinese medicine know that herbal tonic blends tend to taste really awful and bitter! Sage and AnnaBlanca knew that if they wanted to share their love of tonic herbs, they had to make them taste good. Their superfood elixirs are free of gluten, sugar, GMOs, nuts, dairy, and soy and most importantly… delicious!  Mixed with almond milk, they taste like they shouldn’t be good for you! These elixirs are super clean, pure, don’t spike your blood sugar and are mixed with powerful Chinese herbs like cordyceps, lion’s mane, and astralagus to support vital energy.

Addictive Wellness’ Tips for Longevity:

AnnaBlanca and Sage base their health routine on the Chinese Three Treasure System: Jing, Chi and Shen. Think of it as a candle. The Jing is the wax and wick of the candle — the building blocks, the Chi is the flame — the active part, and the Shen is the purpose — your higher spirit, the light in your eyes, how positively and beautifully you can affect the world and others. The stronger and healthier you are, the more positive impact you can have on the world. How do you get there?

Here are Addictive Wellness’ tips:

  • Support your Jing, the energy reserve you’re born with, your core kidney adrenal energy by:
    • Include herbs that support your Jing, like he-shou-wu and cordyceps.
    • Remove sugar from your diet. Sugar breaks down collagen in your skin and ages your cells on a molecular level.
    • Increase your intake of healthy fats.
    • Identify where you’re leaking Jing: crazy lifestyle, stress, partying, processed foods, drugs, not getting enough sleep, etc.
    • Increase your intake of healthy fats.
    • Protect your skin! Anna Blanca’s secret sunscreen solution is Astaxanthin algae extract which helps your skin withstand the sun from within.

As you build up your Jing, your Chi gets stronger, and your Shen—your light and inner spirit—shines brighter. This means you won’t just feel healthier and more alive, you’ll also be able to have a more positive impact on the world around you.

In Episode 133, discover the beautiful story of how Anna Blanca and Sage met and created their range of tonic and elixir raw chocolates. These are amazing stocking stuffers, too. Check out the discount code in our Holiday Gift Guide!

Imagine a world where instead of 1.6 billion Coke drinkers, there are 1.6 billion (and more) people drinking green juice. Today’s guest, fitness and nutrition rockstar, Drew Canole, is passionate about making that a reality. What we consume plays a massive role in how we feel. The future of humanity depends on us being balanced, thriving human beings. That starts with what we choose to put in our bodies. We can change the world through health and nutrition.

Seven years ago, Drew was 45 pounds overweight, pretty unclear about what his life purpose was, going out all the time, and drinking too much. But we all have a wake-up moment, and once Drew had his, there was no turning back. He knew he had to contribute to the world and make a positive difference.

He went on a 90-day juice cleanse, lost 40 pounds, gained clarify, focus, energy, and received a ton on online support! He’s on a mission to help people experience radical joy, connect to oneness, live their purpose, and be the healthiest, fittest version of themselves. He recommends a delicate blend of self-love, listening to what your body is telling you, and cellular nourishment.

Drew is the founder and CEO of FitLife.tv, where he shares inspirational content about healing, longevity, mindset, and nutrition.  We love him and his videos, so go check him out!

Drew created a delicious brand of superfood powders, Organifi. We can’t get enough of them and Drew has very generously given Food Heals Nation a hefty 20% off with the coupon code FoodHeals! Products range from green powder for cleansing and fat burning (with spirulina, chlorella, moringa, matcha, ashwagandha, chlorophyll and more… all the greens without the “green” taste), reishi gold drink for immunity (with reishi and antioxidant turmeric), red anti-aging juice (with acai and cordyceps), protein powder (with added enzymes for better digestion), probiotics, and everything you need to rebalance your body and enjoy a happy, healthy, fit life.

Drew’s tips for your best morning routine:

  • It starts the night before: swap blue lights for red to increase melatonin and help you sleep
  • Start a gratitude list
  • Hydrate with high-vibe water
  • Listen to music from your childhood
  • Commit. Change doesn’t happen overnight. Commit to your new morning ritual for at least 21 days. That’s when the magic begins to happen.

Growing up, Katie’s family, like many, showed love through big portions of low-quality food. During her childhood, Katie was an athlete, exercising up to 6 hours a day and eating whatever she wanted. However, once she got to college, she gained 60 pounds. She fell in love with feminism and used it to present a mask of not caring about her weight. Deep down she wasn’t happy with her body and her relationship with food became dysfunctional.  Suffering from a combination of overeating, bulimia, and exercisorexia, her days were focused around working out, eating food and avoiding food.  She was able to overcome her eating disorder thank to the Overeaters Anonymous 12-step program.

Katie learned that freedom isn’t as much about not having any boundaries, but more about creating boundaries that help you be the best version of yourself.

Early in her life, Katie wanted to make a big impact. Passionate about life and wanting to live big, she now uses her business to do just that. She married her two interests – business and raising women up – to create Biz Women Rock, a resource provider and podcast that helps entrepreneurial women grow their business and live a life of freedom and purpose.

Her podcast is one of our personal favorites and provides the tools you need to create the business of your dreams. Her private Facebook group is a hub for businesswomen from all over the world to share their ups and downs, advice, masterminds and more. You’ll also find all the details for Katie’s transformational events. Join her at her Business Retreat in a luxury mansion in Orlando from December 1-3 or see Katie (and Allison) live at Podfest MultiMedia Expo on February  8-11 in Orlando (We’ll be there too -- get your tickets here!), and Social Media Marketing World in March 2018.

And if you want to watch a beautiful visual image of the podcast movement and why so many of us are choosing this platform to share our message, then check out Katie’s husband, Chris Krimitsos’, beautiful documentary The Messengers

Today we’re back with two VIP guests: Jay and Joy, aka the Jing Slingers. We can’t get enough of these guys! Check out episodes 112 and 151 for Jay and Joy’s story.

The Jing Slingers’ mission is to elevate, educate, and illuminate their clients with tonic herbs and superfoods. Their beautiful book Food with Benefits groups together recipes for the foods you love – perfect for the holidays. That means ice cream and donuts, mashed potatoes and gravy, and even eggnog and pecan pie! Food is at the epicenter of what Jay and Joy do, but it’s food with a difference, food that loves you back. Super healthy, super easy, cleverly conscious food that will supercharge your life force!

We always preach: eat more plants! But it’s more complex than just “eat kale.” Did you know that many plants contain lectins? These natural plant-producing proteins stop certain insects and humans from eating them but can also cause inflammation. Some of the foods highest in lectins also happen to be the highest in antioxidants, too, like tomatoes, quinoa, goji berries, eggplant, which can seem confusing! But don’t worry. Jay and Joy share the secrets to removing lectins from plant foods and getting the most nutritional benefits from any plant. The magic is in the preparation!

Tune in and discover how you can have a healthy Thanksgiving, stick to your plant-based diet and avoid the dreaded muffin top!

The Jing Slingers’ top tips to prevent colds and flus during the holidays: • Activated charcoal binds toxins out of the intestinal tract. • Vitamin D3 helps your t-cells fight infections and viruses. • Mitolife DHA oil supports your immune system. • DNA detox rids your body of toxins and heavy metals so that you can feel strong, awake and revitalized.

Holiday Gift Guide: If you’re into detoxing, or have a friend or loved one who’s into it, then we’ve scored the PERFECT discount code for you. The Jing Slingers have created the DNA Detox, an aqueous Zeolite solution that gets right into your mitochondria to detox your body at a cellular level. Zeolite is used in hazardous situations to mop up toxic spills and make sure they don’t contaminate the soil or ground water. Jay and Joy have formulated it into a product you can safely take to pull toxins, mercury, heavy metals, and even glyphosate, out of your cells. We use it, and it WORKS. So if you want to start 2018 looking and feeling amazing, go to their foodhealsnation.com/jing and save $5 a bottle when you buy three or more- for a total of $15 off! Makes a great gift for friends & family too!

Stay tuned because Jay and Joy will be back on the podcast in the New Year to share their strategies for your healthiest and most delicious year yet.

It’s almost Thanksgiving — an exciting time of year to be grateful for what you have. But it can also be a stressful time for many. The holidays can be full of triggers — family, food, grief — sparked by an uncle whose politics you deplore, being tempted by unhealthy dishes, or the memory of lost loved ones who used to share the holidays with you.

These gatherings can be so emotionally charged that they can destroy your health goals —raising your stress level and leading you to having that third helping of pecan pie. You’re not alone. Today, we’re deep-diving into the emotional triggers the holidays can bring up with special guest, Sophie Uliano, to help you have a happy, healthy Thanksgiving. After all, this is the time for gratitude, togetherness, and love.

Sophie Uliano’s Tips for a Healthy Happy Thanksgiving

Sophie's mission is to help you feel amazing in your own skin and be excited about who you are. We are delighted our Gorgeously Green girlfriend shared some of her favorite Thanksgiving tips to help keep your vibration high this holiday season:

  • Be prepared on every front. If you’re going into a difficult family situation, spend a few days getting ready. Anticipate what might happen and decide how you will react. Journaling is extremely helpful to begin the process of letting go of those feelings.
  • If you’re going away for a few days, pack some healthy treats to take with you (granola, healthy smoothie mix, nuts, almond milk, etc.).
  • Remember what the holidays are about: It’s about love and spending time with people you care about and being grateful for the good in your life.

Underneath the triggers, stress, and possible arguments, we’re all one. We are human beings and we all want to be loved. So let’s give some love and gratitude during the holidays! Stay tuned because Sophie will be back for our New Year special episode to talk about how you can detox your home with organic and natural products.

Every second, 300 animals are killed for food. These animals are the ghosts of our food machine. Tortured, exploited, abused and murdered, farm animals are voiceless and unable to defend themselves which is why we need to stand up for them. That’s exactly what today’s guest, Nathan Runkle, has dedicated his life to doing.

No one would stand by and watch a puppy or kitten get slammed head first into the ground yet that’s exactly what happens to piglets. It’s considered a standard agricultural practice and as such, is exempt from animal cruelty charges. The law doesn’t provide protection for “food animals” however, the only difference between pets and animals for slaughter is our perception. Some are simply unfortunate enough to be born as a species that society says doesn’t matter.

Nathan grew up on a farm in a small town. At 15 years old, after witnessing the brutal murder of a piglet, he founded Mercy for Animals. He started by carrying out open rescues: going into farms’ undercover and rescuing injured animals. Trawling through manure pits, witnessing first-hand the cruel conditions, and investigating the horror of slaughterhouses made him even more determined to give animals a voice and drive positive change in the world.

Today, Mercy for Animals is an internationally recognized organization dedicated to animal rights and putting an end to the cruel and unsustainable factory farming industry. Let’s face it, slaughterhouses don’t have a place in a humane, peaceful world. In order for us to survive as a species, we need to switch to a plant-based diet.

The good news is that on top of a growing vegan movement, cellular agriculture is growing quickly—it won’t be too long before clean meat (meat without murder) makes it to supermarket shelves!

Nathan has just written a book entitled “Mercy for Animals” to inspire people to take action on behalf of farm animals. It tells the story of the unsung heroes of the animal advocacy movement who risk their lives, physical safety and emotional wellbeing to shine a light in some of the darkest places in our society. This book will empower you and show you how you can make a difference to animals and help create a kinder, more sustainable world.

Get involved! Here are some of Nathan’s tips for animal advocacy:

• How you can live your own values to the fullest? How can you embody loving compassion and respect? • Adopt a vegan diet—it’s the best thing to do to help planet and the animals. • How can you be more proactive in driving change? • Get involved in animal rights: animals can’t lobby for new laws; we need to do that for them. Check out Mercy for Animals for initiatives. • Use social media to spread information, hold companies accountable, and demand change. • Find your own unique voice; use your own perspective and talents to drive change for animals. Make donations. Money is energy. Taking on the 1 trillion-dollar global meat industry takes resources. Animal rights organizations need support.

Welcome to our special Halloween episode! Join wellness-preneurs Eco-Vegan GalWhitney LauritsenEaternity’s, Jason Wrobel, and I Vegan You's, Nicole Derseweh, as they share their experiences of the supernatural!  We spent last Halloween together and Nicole rocked the make-up brushes to make us all look totally dope. We’re fascinated by the paranormal and the unexplainable. This is the perfect time of year to ask what you believe in. Do we really know who we are, where we came from? Do you believe in spirits, in aliens? We do! Quantum physics show that our brains can only detect a very small fraction of the reality that is available. This reality isn’t the only reality, and these bodies aren’t the only manifestation of our souls. Each of our Wellness Warriors has had real experiences with spirits and beings from other dimensions. Jason once woke up to find himself pinned to the couch by invisible forces. Nicole captured a dark energy on camera. Whitney accessed the spirit world in her sleep. Allison connected with loved ones on the other side. There’s definitely something bigger than us, and there’s no better time to share these stories than Halloween!

Turn your passion into your career! Join wellness-preneurs Eco-Vegan Gal, Whitney Lauritsen, My Healthy Hustle's Jason Wrobel, and I Vegan You's Nicole Derseweh as they drop knowledge bombs and their secrets on how to do what you love every day.

Being a successful entrepreneur comes down to 7 key areas:

  1. Your Special Sauce

There has never been and will never be another you. You need to double down on your special sauce—own whatever makes you unique. Don’t hide your quirks. They are what make you relatable, and what make other people want to do business with you. No one is perfect! And when you are yourself, when you show up as you are, flaws and all, you empower others to do the same.

When Alison started her wellness blog she thought she had to be the perfect picture of health and happiness 24/7. This meant her posts weren’t authentic and the blog didn’t get much of a following. It wasn’t until she found her true voice and began to share her story on the podcast that Food Heals really took off.

  1. Your Story

Our stories heal. When we share our stories, whatever our struggles or failures, someone listening will resonate with them. The more honest we are, the more our story can heal others and us. That’s how we can be spiritual activists and help the world.

  1. Multiple Streams of Income

If you just focus on one channel, you might be successful but only until the trend lasts, or the algorithm changes. Having more than one income stream means that you create a sustainable and stable revenue.

Say you want to get into content creation. Did you know that there are over 30 ways to make money as a content creator? That’s one of Whitney’s courses. Her income streams come from coaching, consulting, courses, Eco Vegan Gal, and more.

  1. A Little Faith

Today, Jason is a vegan chef, lifestyle coach and nutrition edu-tainer on a mission to reduce suffering and increase joy on this planet. But before this, he worked in advertising. The process of letting go of the old life wasn’t easy. But there comes a point in our lives when we have to accept the gap between where we are and where we want to be, and take that leap of faith.

  1. Patience

Accept that it won’t be an overnight transformation. To start making a difference in people’s lives and make an income, you need to build trust and that takes time. You need to be patient and committed to developing your brand a little each day and be ready for the long haul.

  1. Trust in the Universe

We need to free ourselves from the constraints placed by our own minds, other people and society in order to be successful. It’s about attitude. How much do you believe in yourself and your mission? And how much do you trust that the Universe has your back?

No matter what level we’re at, we don’t know if the course will be successful, if the post will be shared, if that client will call back or if the video will go viral. We have to go beyond knowing into trusting in the Universe, intuition, and life.

  1. Abundance Mindset

Do you have an abundance mindset? Abundance is consciously receiving that which has already being given to you—being grateful. When we are in that high, vibrational energy of gratitude, we attract the right people and opportunities into our lives.

Nicole didn’t even think she could make money from her passion, but it gave her so much joy that it transformed her energy and ended up sparking her acting career. Her genuine inner fulfilment meant that she attracted more of it into her life.

Top tips to up-level your business

Allison:

Don’t be too proud to work for free—it can massively pay off. Sometimes you have to put in the effort to get your foot in the door. It might take doing a few free speaking gigs to reach your tribe and grow your audience.

Insta tip: Use your Instagram feed for your best posts, like a portfolio, and stories like an interview to share who you authentically are.

Jason:

Look at your business as you would an investment. The more sources of income you have, the more sustainable you become. Have as many consistent income streams as possible.

Secret sauce: carve out your uniqueness and trust that the more you reveal of yourself the more people will embrace you.

Nicole:

Treat every role as if it is the award-winning one. It doesn’t matter how many people show up for your course or your webinar, always give your best. Even if it’s the smallest project, treat every opportunity like it is huge.

Whitney:

Figure out money issues which could get in the way of trying to generate income doing what you love. Check out “Money: A Love Story” by Kate Northrup, or Jen Sincero’s “You’re a Bad Ass at Making Money”—great books to help you figure out the emotional and energetic blocks to your financial abundance.

Welcome to Episode 3 of our 4-part Wellness Warrior series! This week, our plant-powered team includes How to Live to 100 host Jason Wrobel, vegan chef and unicorn brunch specialist Nicole Derseweh, and YouTube personality Eco-Vegan Gal Whitney Lauritsen who share their health hacks for longevity

Have you heard of the blue zones? These are 5 cities across the world where people live the longest. What are their secrets? Pretty simple things, actually: movement, nourishing food, community, and spirituality. But it gets better! A longevity lifestyle includes wine (enjoyed responsibly), chocolate (the right kind) and sex (the good kind). Yay!

Why are these things so good for you? Because they reduce the chronic stress our modern lifestyles are packed with. Diet, relationships (with ourselves and others), and stress are today’s silent killers: they affect our health on a molecular level. But you have the power to protect your health, and live longer and happier.

Epigenetics research shows that while our genetics load the gun, our lifestyle pulls the trigger. What this means is that while someone might have a family history of cancer or obesity, these genes only pre-dispose them to disease. How we choose to live our life will determine whether or not those genes wake up. Our daily lifestyle choices, our emotions, and our attitude all affect our genetic expressions.

Of course, it’s not just about just getting to 100 or living as long as possible: it’s about being fit, healthy and happy as long as possible. Quality of life, not just quantity. For that, we need to go beyond just diet and exercise, and look at our attitude. How do you begin your day (check out our Morning Routine Episode)? How to you view yourself and your health? Do you put love into everything you do?

If you want to live a long, vibrant life, you can make that choice: the choice to show up with an attitude of gratitude and a positive vibration.

In the next episode of our Wellness Warrior series, we’ll talk about how to do what you love every day AND how to turn that into a career! Stay tuned!

Welcome to the second episode of our Wellness Warrior series! We’re round-tabling with vegan chef and actress (and rapper!) Nicole Derseweh, world-renowned leader in raw vegan cuisine and host of the J-Wro Wro show Jason Wrobel, and healthy living crusader & founder of Eco-Vegan Gal Whitney Lauritsen, to bring you our favorite alternative medicine secrets.

These days, there’s a pill for every ill. And often another pill to fight the side effects of the first one! While some pharmaceuticals can offer a temporary solution, who wants to take medication for the rest of their lives? Well, you don’t have to. You can support your health and heal yourself naturally.

Secret 1: Detox We’re in a toxicity epidemic. Toxic food, toxic environment, toxic thoughts. Many of us have heavy metals in our bodies, like lead, cadmium and mercury, not to mention xeno-estrogens (plastic-based synthetic estrogen that disrupts hormones). An infrared sauna helps the body detoxify heavy metals through the skin. You can go to spa or get your own. You can gently detox every day by drinking plenty of water and choosing water-dense, fiber-rich, plant-based foods.

Secret 2: Natural Happiness All too often depression is treated with SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors). They may be okay as a bridge to help you over that first hurdle, but long-term they are not always the answer. Jason is living proof that you do not need to go down the pharmaceutical route. Diagnosed with clinical depression 3 years ago, he decided to boost his own serotonin and happy brain chemicals naturally. How? A combination of meditation, exercise, supplementation and self-love.

Secret 3: Heart Health Heart disease is the number one killer in the US. The traditional western medicine response is surgery and medication. But did you know you can reverse heart disease? Studies show that a plant-based diet, meditation and fitness can reverse atherosclerosis. And Japanese research has found that the bacteria used to turn soy into nato (ultra fermented soy) actually eats the arterial plaque in the heart, cleaning it! But heart disease is more than just about saturated fat and processed foods. We reject affection, we block love, we shy away from connection, we’re afraid, we don’t love ourselves—heart disease is also a disease of empty heart. Our mindset and how much love we feel for ourselves and others also plays a huge role in our healing.

Secret 4: Healthy Mindset Chronic pain indicates more than just a physical issue. Often, it’s a sign of blocked or unresolved emotions. How do you view yourself, your life, your relationships? What are you saying when you feel unwell? Our beliefs create our reality. If you’re constantly sick, what is going on in your life, in your mind, what is your attitude? Your mental energy and what you believe has the power to completely shift your healing.

Top Wellness Warrior Alternative Medicine Tips:

Nicole: Forget sugary snacks that end up making you tired—make your snacking raw and bioavailable instead, like dates, nuts, smoothies. For a caffeine-free healthy pick-me-up, go for Matcha green tea.

Jason: Blood of the Dragon: A special tree sap from the Amazon, which creates a scab over deep wounds (you know, the kind you get when you’re creating vegan art with a mandolin)! It completely healed Nicole’s and Jason’s chef injuries.

Allison: Get a vibration machine (no! not THAT kind!)—a vibrating platform shakes up your whole body and really sets you up for meditation. And cryotherapy (shout out to CryoZone in Santa Monica!)—the freezing temperatures boost your body’s healing potential and give you a natural high.

Whitney: When Whitney got the flu recently, she turned to herbs, inflammation-fighters like ginger, garlic and turmeric, positive affirmations, and essential oils—you can use them internally as well as in a diffuser.

Welcome to the first part of our brand new 4-part Wellness Warrior Series! And it starts just like any great day should: with a magical morning routine. Because how you begin each day dramatically affects every area of your life. We’ve all felt the difference between a day we begin with a tall glass of lemon water and a yoga practice, versus a day when we hit the snooze button fifteen times before grudgingly dragging ourselves out of bed, right?

Our circadian rhythms can get totally out of balance, especially if we live in the city. There’s artificial light, wifi, EMF, irregular work hours, etc. and these all affect how we sleep, how we wake up, and how good (or bad) we feel. That’s why creating a magical morning routine can help you wrestle some of the control back, and work wonders for your wellness. Of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all model. We can’t all be early birds, thriving on 5am starts. You have to find your own sweet spot, just like today’s guests. Listen now [bitly]!

For Eco-Vegan Gal and healthy living crusader Whitney Lauritsen, water, meditation and movement are the top three priorities. She starts her day on her rebounder or takes a moment to spend time outside. She also suggests Journaling as also a great way to begin your day, by setting your intention and aligning with a positive vibration.

The number one rule of magical morning routines, according to vegan chef, culinary comedian and Eaternity Author Jason Wrobel, is: Don’t switch on your emails or social media before you’ve taken care of yourself. Jason’s routine includes lots of water with either lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to alkalize, meditation, exercise and a plant-based breakfast. A good morning begins the night before, so create a sleep sanctuary: turn off your wifi and electrical devices, invest in black-out curtains, leave your phone on airplane mode.

Nicole Derseweh, vegan chef and founder of the Unicorn brunch pop up series in LA, begins her magical morning routine with a conscious loving breathing practice sending loving, healing energy to each part of her body and being grateful for how it has served her. She believes you should put your priorities at the top of your day. For her, it’s community and friendship, so her morning routine includes a hike with girlfriends.

Allison starts her day with a gratitude journal, and this is a simple practice that will change your entire day. As an energy boost, Allison practices various yoga poses utilizing breath of fire. The Kundalini Breath of Fire is an intense breathing practice that will get you fired up in the morning—great if you struggle to get up! And don’t forget your green smoothie!

You are the star and director of the movie of your life. You get to choose. Stay in bed and snooze, or get up and shine? Start your day believing in and attracted abundance, or start your day in fear and anxiety? When you start your day centered, you can create the day you want. By simply changing how you wake up, you can transform any area of your life faster than you ever thought possible.

If you like the series so far, stay tuned! We’ve got three more topics to help you transform into a wellness warrior:

Did you know that 75% of your immune system is in your gut? Or that 95% of your serotonin is produced in your intestines? Little wonder that it’s sometimes called your “second brain!”

According to Dr. Axe, there are four R’s to healing the gut: • Remove • Replace • Repair • Rebalance

Remove—foods and triggers that upset your gut • Stress • Unnecessary medication • Environmental toxins – remove non-organic foods, fast foods, unhealthy foods, GMO foods • Trigger foods – caffeine, gluten, dairy, refined sugar

Replace—trigger foods with healing foods • Fermented veggies – sauerkraut and kimchi • Green juice • Organic nutrient rich fruits and veggies

Repair—with supplements • Digestive enzymes • L-Glutamine acid • Liquorice root • Quercetin

Rebalance • Probiotics (the good bacteria in your gut) • Prebiotics (what feeds the good bacteria in your gut)

It was Hippocrates that first said “All disease begins in the gut.” And he was right. Therefore, healing needs to begin in the gut. As you get started on your journey to health, this is the first place you need to focus some loving attention. We reached out to two of our favorite health and wellness experts, JJ Flizanes and Evita Ramparte, to talk all things digestion!

Digestion is everything. It’s your fuel source. Everything you put in your mouth gets broken down in your body and either gets used up as energy, gets turned into cells, or gets eliminated. The quality and variety of what you choose to eat determines how well your body functions. But modern diets are packed with allergens (GMOs, glyphosate-sprayed wheat, chemical additives, gluten, dairy, pesticides, etc.) that the gut cannot process. The result? Inflammation, depression, chronic disease.

One of the most common digestive problems is leaky gut. Your gut wall is lined with villi—these are tiny finger-like structures that filter out food particles, absorbing the good stuff and keeping other stuff out. But when you eat foods that your body struggles to break down, it becomes wedged in your gut lining. Over time this creates micro tears in your intestine, which means undigested food particles, that are supposed to be contained within the gut wall, escape into your bloodstream. This triggers an immune response: your body attempts to protect itself from what it considers a foreign invader by sending white blood cells to attack. The result? Inflammation. And the more you keep eating foods you can’t digest, the more tears appear, the more inflammation you experience, and the more your health deteriorates. The first thing to do if you want to heal your gut is a 2 to 4 week elimination diet. JJ teaches the best way to do this in her 5-month Invisible Fitness transformational program.

Symptoms of poor digestion: • Skin irritation – eczema, rashes, etc. • Constipation • Irritable bowel syndrome • Bloating • Gas • Diarrhea • Cramps • Excess mucus (throat and nose) • Are you pooping right? Check out the Bristol Stool Chart!

But more than just diet, your emotions are heavily involved in gut health. In fact, how you digest food is linked to how you digest life. When your emotions are blocked, they’re usually blocked in the gut. If you have a digestive issue that no supplementation is fixing, it could be an emotional issue. If you’re sad or stressed or holding on to anger, your gut responds to that.

Goddess of Wellness and Tigress of Business, Evita Ramparte shares her secrets to healing your gut through juice cleansing. Evita healed her ovarian cancer and lost 50 pounds in just a few months thanks to detoxing, a raw vegan diet, and transforming her emotions. You can listen to her incredible healing story in Episode 57.

Welcome to our Tuesday Q&A! Before we get to the questions, we want to share our favorite tips for becoming healthier, happier, AND hotter. Listen now [bitly]!

• Do something you love every single day. Dancing, singing, painting, spending time with loved ones, cooking--whatever your passion, carve out time in your day to experience something that brings you joy. Even devoting just five minutes to your passions will leave you feeling more uplifted all day and that joy will extend into all areas of your life. • • Choose Happiness. Happiness doesn’t come from external things (new car, promotion, marriage, baby, etc.) it comes from within. Your happiness is a choice. And the way into that happiness is gratitude. Check out the book Believing in Myself by Earnie Larsen. • Eat high vibe energizing food. No, we’re not talking about caffeine. ;) Most of us are stuck in a junk-food cycle. We eat foods that make us feel sluggish. We opt for sugar and coffee to perk ourselves up, which only leaves us feeling more tired. Break the cycle and focus on high vibe energizing foods instead. Think: a banana with a spoonful of nut butter, veggies dipped in tahini dressing, avocado and aminos, fruit or vegetable smoothies, raw soups, green powders, maca, chia seeds, cacao…. • Forgive and be grateful. If you hold onto anger or judgement against another person, or yourself, it only hurts you. Holding onto anger is like holding a hot coal. If you want to be free and experience true happiness, you must forgive and release that negative emotion. You can choose to be a loving human being to yourself and to others. The way to get there is through gratitude.

Now let’s dig into this week’s questions!

Question 1: What’s the best way to tone and lift a saggy butt? We reached out to Ella Magers for her secrets to a toned and tight booty. There is no one-size-fits-all perfect butt: a sexy booty is the healthiest fittest version of your own. To achieve that, you’re going to need to clean up your diet and do some targeted exercises. Squats and lunges are your best friends. Depending on your specific goals, you’ll either need to do more reps (to tone up) or add some weights (to build and firm). If you want an awesome work out for your booty, then check out the Brazil Butt Lift Workout!

Question 2: What are your thoughts on plant milks and which do you recommend? To answer this question in depth we asked Eco Vegan Gal Whitney Lauritsen, our go-to-girl for the latest in vegan research and taste-testing. We love plant milks and have probably tried all of them, but here are some of our favs: Oatly oat milk (we’re a bit obsessed with this one, it’s super creamy!) and So Delicious coconut milk are perfect if you have a nut sensitivity because they’re nut free. If you don’t have an issue with nuts, then Milkadamia macadamia nut milk Califia Farms almond milk, Forager cashew milk, and Rice Dream rice milk are all delicious.

You can make milk from most nuts and grains (like quinoa, hazelnuts, flax seeds, hemp seeds, etc.) so experiment to find your favorite. Whatever brand you go for, make sure you check the ingredients—some brands are more processed than others.

Question 3: How flexible is JJ Flizane’s Invisible Fitness Course and what’s included? JJ’s five-month transformation course, Invisible Fitness, is a self-paced online program. When you sign up, you decide when you want to start. You get a 30-minute coaching call with JJ every month where you can get support with whatever you need. These coaching calls can be grouped together to fit your unique needs. You also get personal attention from JJ via her Invisible Fitness Academy, where you’ll find a supportive community and accountability partners. The course is flexible and customizable! You can get in touch with JJ at info@invisiblefitness.com for more information.

If you want to reach your fitness and wellness goals, and be the healthiest, happiest and hottest version of yourself, then JJ’s course is perfect for you—but hurry because there are only 2 weeks left to enroll! Click here to get all the details about the course, plus fabulous bonuses!

Natural Tooth Powder Recipe The most important thing you can do for your teeth and mouth is to move away from conventional toothpaste brands, as they contain ingredients that are known to disrupt hormones and irritate gums. Instead, make your own mouth-and-tooth-friendly natural products. This is Suzy’s new and improved tooth powder recipe:

• 1/2 cup baking soda (neutralizes the acids in your mouth, makes your mouth alkaline, which means bacteria can’t grow there) • 3 tbsp calcium carbonate powder (for healing receding gums) • 1/8 cup Himalayan salt, milled very fine (for tightening gums) • 10-20 drops therapeutic grade essential oil (peppermint, spearmint, lemon, clove, you can blend these to suit you) Optional: • You can also add 1 tbsp dried herbs like mint, sage, parsley, lavender – get experimental and add an earthy vibe to your toothpaste! • For a little sweetness, add Xylitol, which is antimicrobial and great for your teeth

If you have gum recession, get some comfrey root, make tea from it, and use it as a mouthwash—it will help regrow your gums. You can also get calcium ascorbate powder, which is vitamin C buffered with calcium. A little bit applied to your gums will bring them back to health. If you don’t have time to make your own natural toothpaste, try Ecodent.

We’ve admired her for a long time and we’re so glad to have her on the show! Kathy Patalsky was inspired by her love of animals and her struggles with an eating disorder to start the vegan food blog HealthyHappyLife over a decade ago.

But as we know, being a successful eco-entrepreneur isn’t always easy. Too much work, no socializing, no time to process emotions. Invariably this affects our physical health. For Kathy, this manifested as asthma flare-ups, exhaustion, depression, and panic attacks. Doctors and naturopaths couldn’t diagnose anything specific. The cause: repressing emotions. Pretending everything is ok. Basically, faking it.

Can you relate? We can! And we need to stop. It’s natural not to want to be judged for feeling sad, or being unable to cope with a crazy workload, or not being “perfect.” But, plastering a smile on your face and saying, “I’m fine” only makes it worse. You need to be vulnerable sometimes, to be gentle with yourself, to reach out to a friend, to give in to what your body is calling out for, whether that’s a hug, a walk in nature, a massage, meditation, or healthy plant-based food.

Kathy’s websites HealthyHappyLife and FindingVegan are the perfect places to get inspired to add more vegan goodness to your life. And with the app, you can literally veganize any dish (there are over 116,000 recipes!!). If you’re a plant-based food blogger, head to Kathy’s Facebook Group to connect with and get support from like-minded people. If you have a question about veganism or panic attacks, reach out to Kathy via her FB or Twitter.

Kathy has also written the best-selling books 365 Vegan Smoothies (where you’ll find smoothies for your every wellness need) and Healthy Happy Vegan Kitchen (which groups together Kathy’s favorite and most popular recipes).

Are you addicted? Probably. Addiction is simply a movement away from feeling something. Most of us don’t want to feel—we seek to distract ourselves. And most of us are addicted—to coffee, to control, to sugar, to approval, to people pleasing, to social media, etc. These addictions are simply the strategies we’ve found to keep ourselves from experiencing, and expressing, unpleasant feelings and emotions.

Feelings don’t just appear out of nowhere. They are an energy born of your mental chatter. First you have a thought. From that comes an interpretation (depending on your life experience), which then determines how you feel about it.

“The emotion that can break your heart is often the very one that heals it.” In other words, you have to feel it to heal it. Unexpressed emotion and repressed anger will only cause more of the same, and damage your health too.

So how can you embrace and process your feelings? Tune in to discover JJ’s 3-step process!

What about body shame? No matter our shape or size, the majority of us have some form of body shame: we dislike our bodies, put ourselves through extreme workouts, go on diets, but nothing ever works. And this is because we’re only addressing the surface. Everything from your biology to your spirituality, your endocrine system, thoughts and beliefs, are all part of fitness, even though they’re invisible. We need to go deeper than dieting and exercise.

JJ Flizanes is an empowerment strategist, personal trainer, podcast host and best-selling author. Her latest book “The Invisible Fitness Formula: 5 Secrets to Release Weight & End Body Shame” is dedicated to helping you address the emotional causes of weight gain, and reconnect with your body.

Frozen Fruit Co is all about soft serve fruit. Michael & Victoria originally came up with the concept whilst in London. They both suffer from a massive sweet tooth, but at the same time are conscious about what they eat - two things which don't always go together.

So, they came up with their fruit swirl recipes. Not to be confused with frozen yogurt Frozen Fruit Co’s soft serve is made by taking fruits and mixing them together to create amazing layered tastes. They add some natural fruit extracts or dates for sweetness and then cool and whip into their all fruit soft serve - made daily at their Santa Monica store.

Michael & Victoria wanted to create a product where you could have your cake and eat it - for anyone with a sweet tooth like them that love frozen desserts but who wants a better tasting, more natural product which they can feel good about eating and feeding to their families.

Kathleen Moore is a psychic medium with over 25 years’ experience. From very young, she had the ability to see things differently and reach out to the spirit world. She sees into her clients’ future, and helps them connect with passed loved ones. Death not the end, it is merely a transformation of energy. They’re still here, but in a different form. Death is not a permanent separation. They’re simply gone home, back to the spirit world—a world intrinsically connected with the physical one. This is why it is possible to reach out to them. Kathleen is also an intuitive coach and spiritual counselor. She will help you uncover your truth, live a more authentic life, and find happiness. It’s a myth and an ego-trick to think happiness is hard—happiness is easy. Every challenging experience helps to bring you to a higher vibration, if you choose to perceive it that way. What you allow is what will occur—shift your perspective. See things from a place of love. Trust your intuition and your inner voice. After all, that is why we are here: to experience, to teach, to love, to bring our souls to a higher vibration. And when it comes to love, Kathleen dispels the myth that we only have one soulmate. We have thousands! Some will be lovers, others plutonic relationships. Some may last a year, others a lifetime. If you’re destined to be together, you will be. At just 27 years old, Isabelle Shuman received a diagnosis that changed her life forever: Multiple Sclerosis. She was told to get ready for a wheelchair, and given long list of pharmaceuticals with an even longer list of side effects. But she’s a tough chick, and had experienced the benefits of holistic healing at a young age, when acupuncture had healed her migraines.  She knew there was another way. She chose to embark on a different path: a holistic path towards health. Isabelle left New York and its stressed-out party scene, and came to LA where she studied yoga, meditation, and acupuncture. She feels that she is here to help others heal, and each of her patients has had symptoms Isabelle herself has experienced throughout her life. Auto immune diseases are not curable. They lie dormant, and can flare up at various stages, depending what’s going on in your life. But if you are at peace with the fact it’s going to be up and own, and create healing protocols for those moments, you’re not shaken to the core when it happens, you can deal with it. Healing your body, whatever the issue, is first and foremost about the mind. Isabelle stopped saying “I have MS” and replaced it with “I was diagnosed with MS.” Because what we say to ourselves reflects in our health and in our whole life. Focus on what you want to create. You can manifest anything you desire, as long as you fully believe in it. Using a combination of functional medicine, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and kundalini, Isabelle was able to heal her multiple sclerosis and is now healthy and thriving. She’s on a mission to help others throw off disease and enjoy vibrant health. It’s hard to believe today, but up until 1937, marijuana was available over the counter in every pharmacy in the country. But for various political and business reasons, this ancient remedy was vilified, demonized, and marginalized. It’s now classed by the government as a Schedule 1 substance, putting it in the same category as heroin. Thankfully, the tide is shifting once more to recognizing the marijuana’s medical potential. Working in ER, Dr. Rachna Patel would see many patients come in suffering as a result of accidental or intentional opioid overdose. She also witnessed patients become addicted to these pharmaceutical painkillers. Marijuana had never been mentioned in medical school, but when Rachna came across a study that showed marijuana could reduce patients’ dependence on opioids, she knew it was time to change direction. In 2012, Dr. Rachna Patel opened up her own clinic. She now helps patients in the Bay area California to safely use medical marijuana to treat a range of conditions from chronic pain to anxiety and insomnia. “It’s a very real medicine,” she says, and compared to pharmaceuticals, which are responsible for thousands of deaths each year, medical marijuana is a safe and natural solution. If you have any questions, check out Dr. Rachna’s YouTube channel or Facebook page.
