Kerri went vegan at the age of 12. But she wasn’t a healthy vegan. Pasta, sugar, gluten, soy, and junk food all featured in her diet, causing drastic mood swings, low energy and skin issues. After 24 years of that kind of strict veganism, she felt like crap. She had constant sugar cravings, was tired all the time, was anemic, started losing her hair, and her brain didn’t work. And all the doctor did was… prescribe medicine. He didn’t even ask Kerri about her diet. He just diagnosed her with ADD and handed her some pills.

At that moment, Kerri had a breakthrough. It wasn’t about veganism. It was about health and eating right. The food choices you make dramatically affect your mood and your physical health. Your gut isn’t called your second brain for nothing – that’s where your immune system is, and where most of your serotonin is produced. So if you’re eating foods that cause poor digestion and inflammation in your gut, then of course that this is going to affect your mental health, and increase your risk of auto-immune issues and disease.

The biggest culprit in all of this is the one food we all find so hard to give up: sugar. Kerri only needed to walk past a strawberry shortbread to get a craving. We often associate sweet tastes with happy times in our childhoods, so we naturally seek it out, especially when we’re stressed or sad. And we’re hard-wired to desire sweet foods. Basically, we’re addicted to it. To really step into health, we have to free ourselves from our sugar cravings. That’s exactly what Kerri did, and why she’s launched her new brand Ageless and Healthy, dedicated to helping people be the healthiest, most beautiful version of themselves.

Kerri’s Tips for Ageless Health and Beauty:

  • Hydration, hydration, hydration: have 2-3 liters of water a day and in 3 months you will look like you’ve had fillers in your face. But you also need electrolytes to help your cells to absorb that water.
  • Vitamin C: apply vitamin C serum and take vitamin C supplements.
  • Make sure your anti-aging cream contains vitamin C and retinol. These nutrients WILL tighten your skin.
  • Use sunscreen.
  • HALO laser therapy.
  • Beauty begins from within: eat your greens! They instantly alkalize you and give you boundless energy (way better than coffee!).
  • To address rosacea, go on an elimination diet; focus on the foods you eat or drink every day.
  • IPL: intense pulse light laser therapy.
  • Take care of your insides: focus on anti-inflammatory healing foods (turmeric, greens, antioxidants) and leave the junk foods on the shelf.

Lynne Taggart works with spiritual entrepreneurs, deep diving into the inner work most of us avoid doing, to make their business super successful. Alli met Lynne at Level 3 of Spirit Junkie Masterclass.

Until then, Lynne had held back. She did most of her work online because she didn’t feel ready to be that visible. But during a mastermind with Gabby Bernstein, Lynne realized she was being called to do more in-person work.

  • When you get an idea or a desire, don’t ignore it! You deserve it and you CAN do it. Recognize that desire and tune into it.
  • Explore the desire, what does it look like, what does it feel like? You’re declaring to the Universe that you want it to happen.
  • Begin to look for signs and take heed. The Universe will deliver what you need to make your dreams happen.

Kundalini teacher, spiritual coach, comedian, speaker, all-round entrepreneurial superstar… Danielle Mercurio is a gypsy of all trades, she is living her truth.

  • Don’t fall prey to magical thinking: You have to take action.
  • Focus on winning the day: live with more intent, more purpose and more passion.

How you stand affects your mood

How you stand directly impacts how you feel. Similarly, how you feel directly impacts how you stand. When you feel depressed, you hunch your shoulders, cross your arms, hold your head low. When you feel uplifted, you stand straight, shoulders back, head held high. But at any moment you can choose to feel uplifted, or choose to feel depressed. By changing your posture, you can achieve a new emotional state. This fact is supported by science. Studies have shown that people with poor posture are more likely to experience negative moods and be self-critical. In the same way, people with good posture are happier, feel more confident, have a positive body image. You have the power to change your mood, simply by changing how you hold your body.

Dr. Krista’s tips to get relief from back pain:

  • Get to the root cause of your pain (take the archetype assessment)
  • Move the area where you feel pain
  • Strengthen your core - it will help support your spine and maintain postural alignment
  • Bring your cellphone or laptop up to eye level so you’re not constantly looking down in a slumped posture. Avoid tech-neck!
  • Create an active workspace. Standing desk, active sitting (like sitting on an exercise ball or posture cushion).
  • Take frequent posture breaks; get up and stretch.
  • Use a posture reminder - this will help you create long lasting back-friendly habits.
  • Have a postural evaluation every year, just like you’d have a health check.

  • You don’t need to be perfect. Allow yourself time to transition.
  • Don’t be afraid of what other people think.
  • There’s a lot to learn about veganism; it’s harder than going vegetarian. Give yourself the resources (podcasts, documentaries, blogs, etc.) to make it easier to transition.
  • Add more plants to your diet; we’ve got some great tips for this coming up in Episode 204 with Vegan Bros!

Alison Burgos wasn’t always into plant-based food. In fact, she didn’t enjoy vegan food at all! It took a severe health condition to get her to completely re-think her lifestyle.

Our favorite functional medicine expert, Dr. Stephen Cabral, has spent decades researching all forms of medicine. He believes they all have a place, and can all be used to bring about health. His mission is to help people go from chronic pain, depression and disease to a state of vitality and happiness.

What is Disease?

A simplified way to look at disease is this: people either get sick because of toxicity, or because of deficiency. If we can address the deficiencies (by supplementing vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc.) and begin to remove the toxicities (such as excess hormones, plastics, etc.), we can heal anything.

 

Western Medicine vs Functional Medicine

Unfortunately, the goal of conventional medicine is not to get better. It just addresses the symptoms. So, for example, high cholesterol is just a symptom (or sign) that there is a deeper issue, like an auto-immune condition or excess toxins. Conventional medicine will prescribe drugs to manage the symptoms without getting to the underlying root cause. They might make you feel a bit better in the short term, but they don’t provide long-term benefits. On the other hand, functional medicine will look at what might be causing the condition, and help you bring your body back into a state of healthy balance. That said, if you’re suffering a heart attack, you’re better off heading to the emergency room rather than your natural health doctor!

 

Your Health and The Rain Barrel Effect

Your body is in a constant state of homeostasis: it is always trying to return to a healthy balance. This means that it can deal with a lot (of stress, junk food, toxins) before finally disease shows up in your blood tests. It’s what Dr. Cabral calls the “rain barrel effect,” which is also the title of his best-selling book. Your rain barrel is essentially your toxic load. If it’s overflowing, your health suffers. You need to empty it out - to clear your toxicity - in order to bring your body back into balance.

 

How to Heal Your Body

According to Dr. Cabral, you can heal anything within 12 to 16 weeks (3-4 months). That’s because all your red blood cells turn over every 90-120 days (also 3-4 months). As this happens your mitochondria (your cells’ energy stores) are replenished with nutrients, you’ll have more energy and fewer symptoms. Diet is a huge part of that journey, but you need to take a holistic approach. Addressing food without overcoming emotional trauma just won’t work. A lot of our disease comes from our emotions.

 

Where to Begin?

A great way to find out what is happening in your body is to have functional tests done. These will look at markers that conventional medicine usually ignores, to give you a complete picture of what is going on with your health right now. You can order these tests on Dr. Cabral’s online store. Dr. Cabral will read through them and you’ll get a phone call from one of his team’s health coaches to discuss the results.

 

Dr. Cabral’s Weight Loss and Detox Tips:

  • Forget about crash diets or regimes, they are not sustainable and don’t work long term.
  • Crowd out the bad foods with nourishing foods (plant based whole foods are your friends here).
  • Don’t graze all day long, allow your body 4-5 hours between meals to give your cortisol levels a chance to level out.
  • Reset your circadian rhythm - your body detoxifies from around 10pm.
  • Eat foods that support your liver detoxification (like cruciferous veg: broccoli, kale, etc.).
  • Try Dr. Cabral’s detox shakes or his detox protocol.

 

Dr. Cabral and Leslie Durso’s Healthy Travel Tips:

  • Get your antibacterial wipes and wipe everything around you - planes are never cleaned.
  • Get a good night’s sleep before your flight.
  • Avoid alcohol, coffee or tea on the plane, and drink a lot of water (that said, a glass of wine will help you sleep on those super long flights).
  • Ramp up your immune system a few days before: take plenty of vitamin c, zinc and green juices.
  • Fast so that your energy can be focused on protecting your body from germs and toxins (like flame retardants and bug sprays) rather than digesting food.
  • Never eat airplane food - it’s microwaved and full of preservatives.
  • Bring your own health supplements.

Myth 1: Synthetic chemicals are bad, and “natural” ingredients always better and safer.

Well, first off, the term “natural” is not regulated at all, so anyone can put that on their label. And when it comes to synthetics, well, that just means “made in a lab.” Let’s take the top four ingredients that really make a difference to your skin: Vitamin C (in the form of ascorbic acid), retinoids, hydroxyacids and peptides. These need to be used in their synthetic forms to be stable. They might be “chemicals” but they’re completely safe for your skin.

Best Skin Care Ingredients to Fade Sun Spots Fast:

  • For sensitive skin/prone to breakouts: beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) that contains willow bark which will also gets rid of your black heads.
  • For not so sensitive skin: alpha hydroxy acid to melt away the dead skin cells and reveal your glow.

Myth 2: Everyone should use retinols.

Yes, but also no. Actually, retinols are something everyone should use because as our skin gets older, it thins - that’s what makes under eyes appearing darker. Retinoids help to thicken skin. BUT prescription-strength retinoids can be too harsh and cause damage. It’s all in the dosage. You need a tiny amount, and if your skin is sensitive you need to look out for the gentler forms of retinol.

Myth 3: Lectins are really bad for you.

Lectins are protein molecules found in almost all vegetables. They’re the plant’s protection mechanism, so can cause digestive upset if eaten raw because some lectins are toxic, for example the ones found in red kidney beans (phytohaemagglutinin) - which is why you should never eat a raw bean!

But lately everyone’s been talking about how bad they are for you, and how “dangerous” it may be to eat plants. Let’s get real: there’s no way eating a wholefoods plant-based diet is ever dangerous. It’s the most natural way of eating. What’s more, most lectins are destroyed by cooking.

Myth 4: Juicing is better than smoothies.

Juices are great, but smoothies are better. Mother Nature created the whole fruit - when you juice you take out so many of the healing nutrients, like the fiber, which keeps your digestive system ticking over nicely. It’s important to eat the whole plant, and smoothies help you do exactly that. Smoothies win.

Asher Brown stopped eating meat when he was just 9 years old. He realized if could ask what the cow might want, it would not want to be eaten.

It wasn’t easy being the only vegetarian in his family; his mom worried he might never grow up big and strong without meat. But his parents supported him and at 20, he went from vegetarian to vegan.

However, like many of us, he was an apologetic vegan. He didn’t want to make others uncomfortable, didn’t want to be the odd one out or the “awkward” guy at the dinner table. 

But when he got hired to make videos for Beyond Meat, all that changed—he found his voice.

He discovered Vegan Instagram, and that he was part of a group of millions of vegans around the world, standing up for the animals.

That sparked his move into activism.

Asher began speaking at conferences, connecting with other vegans, and working for vegan brands.

Nearly 60 percent of women aged 18 to 35 have experienced abuse in their relationships and 24 percent of women in abusive relationships have not told anyone they’re being harmed.

These types of toxic relationships take a rigorous toll on our health; often causing PTSD & depression and can become extremely dangerous.

In today’s episode we will tell the story of survivor and brave soul Rosie Aiello, the abuse she endured, and how she eventually made “the great escape.”

Rosie Aiello moved to the Middle East to be with her new husband. On the outside, they had the perfect marriage, but the warning signs where there from the honeymoon.

Isolated, without a support system, emotionally, physically and financially abused, Rosie spent most of her marriage not realizing she was in an abusive relationship; she just thought she wasn’t good enough.

But the second she realized her daughter was also being controlled, she set about orchestrating the escape of their lives. Their bid to freedom worked, and they’ve been back in the US since 2009. The loss of a child is one of the most unimaginable experiences a parent can go through. And that’s exactly what happened to Marie White. Three and a half years ago, her toddler was abducted. As of this writing, her child is still missing. Three years ago, Jeff’s wife was diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer. She was told her life would change forever: surgery, chemo, radiation, a life without an essential organ. They decided not to take the doctor’s word for it, and travelled to Germany to treat the cancer naturally. Juicing, plant-based meals, hypothermia (targeted heat therapy), oxygen therapy, intravenous vitamins, minerals and amino acids, colonics—it was like a spa, with a difference. Within 30 days, she was completely cancer free.

She’s not an isolated case. Natural cancer therapies have an 80 to 90% success rate. And yet, when Jeff went to the newspapers to share this story and inspire hope, he was turned down time after time. Western medicine is a business, and it can’t profit from a natural cure for cancer.   • Find out what’s going on: If you know what’s going on in your body, you can treat it. RGCC testing will show you which substances work with your immune system to kill your cancer cells.
  • Take care of your teeth: One of the major causes of cancer is root canals. They cut off the tooth’s blood and nerve supplies, and eventually it becomes gangrenous and infected. Because the immune system is focused on the tooth, the rest of the body gets neglected, and cancer can develop. It’s best to take the tooth out.
  • Natural therapies: Coffee enemas, infrared saunas.

  • Let go of fear. We guard our hearts because we are afraid of pain and hurt, but when we do this we cannot let love in. Honor your past wounds, heal them, and create a safe space for love.
  • Put out the right vibration. A closed heart attracts a closed heart. An open heart attracts an open heart.
  • Heal your sexual energy. Experiencing pleasure is part of our birth-right. When you consciously connect and make love, you’re sending that energy out into the universe. Reconnect with your sacred sexuality.
  • The more willing we are to love, the more the universe will support us. Be willing to let love into your life.
  • Start by loving yourself. Don’t pine for someone else’s attention, give yourself what you need.

Emunah’s tips to reconnect with your partner on Valentine’s Day

  • Forget the hustle of eating out and keep it simple instead; order in or cook together.
  • Make time to connect with your partner: no cell phones, no tv, no to-do lists.
  • Sit in front of each other and breathe together; synchronize your breath, look into each other’s eyes and be present. This alone is a hugely powerful practice. Begin to open your heart. Choose to be open, to let your partner in, to be vulnerable.
  • Hold the space for safe sharing. Tell your partner something you appreciate about them, something you find attractive, a fantasy you have. Then have them tell you.
  • Practice sacred orgasmic meditation.

We are 70% water. If the water we drink is toxic, of course our health suffers! The average tap water contains a cocktail of chemicals: pesticides, plastics, chlorine and fluoride, to name but a few. Today’s guest, Travis Chappell, is at the forefront of a movement for clean, pure, healthy water. 

Travis was always pretty active, playing several hours of basketball every day when he was in college. But when he started doing door-to-door sales, his health deteriorated. He gained 40 pounds, and was constantly suffering with aches, pains, and various health issues. And one day, he couldn’t fit into 38-inch trousers—he knew something had to change. That’s when he bought a water filtration system, and started drinking a gallon a day and going to the gym. Eighteen months later, he’d lost 60 pounds and 6 inches off his waist. Water changed the way Travis thought about health, and now he’s on a mission to help others transform their wellbeing through the water they drink.

There’s a direct correlation between water and health. Our modern diets are acidic, even the air we breathe is acidic. The body produces fat cells to neutralize the acidity that it simply isn’t equipped to deal with. It also stores toxins from water, food and environment in our adipose (fat) tissue. Result: weight gain. But when you drink filtered, alkaline water, you change your body’s pH and help it to detox, which means it doesn’t need to produce extra fat cells, and you naturally lose weight.   • FOOD
    • Make sure you add these foods to your diet:
      • Plant pigments: Colorful fruits and vegetables (like blueberries, leafy greens, beetroot, etc.), cacao, matcha green tea, organic coffee (in moderation – 2 cups a day), and red wine (also in moderation!).
      • Smart fats: If you’re on a low-fat diet, stop! Your brain is made up of 60% fat, so you need smart fats to keep it functioning at its best. Good sources include nuts, seeds, olive oil, and avocados. Also take an omega 3 DHA supplement.
      • Herbs and spices: These are packed with anti-inflammatories and anti-oxidants which fight free radicals and keep your brain young. The best combinations are Italian herbs (like rosemary, basil, oregano, etc.) and curry spices (like turmeric, cumin, fenugreek, etc.).
      • Probiotics: Your gut is your second brain. Most of the neurotransmitters needed for proper cognitive function are made in your digestive system, so keep it healthy by including gut-friendly foods like miso, sauerkraut, and kombucha.
    • Avoid the following foods:
      • Refined carbohydrates (sugar, flour): These carbs hike up your blood sugar and are the number one cause of memory loss!
      • Nitrosamines: These are preservatives used in processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, sausages, etc. They are neurotoxic, and increase your risk of cancer and diabetes.
      • Tuna and large fish: They’re high in mercury, which is toxic to our brains!
  • FITNESS
    • Physical exercise: Both aerobic exercise and strength training are essential to keep your brain young.
    • Mental exercise: Never stop learning! Gaining new skills, taking classes and feeding your brain with knowledge creates more neural connections and improves your brain speed.
  • STRESS
    • Stress actually shrinks your brain! When you’re stressed, your cortisol levels go up, and this raises your blood sugar which increases your risk of artery plaque and heart disease. Take some time out every day to meditate, make sure you get proper sleep, and do something that makes you feel good. Romance and sex are good for both your heart and your brain!
